What is a Network Administrator?

Defined by WikiPedia: Network administrators are computer engineers who are responsible for the maintenance of computer hardware and software that comprises a computer network.

Why do I need a Network Administrator?

If there are network components such as servers, workstations and printers implemented into your business, then it is a good possibility you would benefit from an administrator. An LX Net Dev Admin would be responsible for maintaining your company network to ensure downtime is at a minimum. Everything from network security to physical maintenance would be handled by the Admin to ensure a worry free environment. This will include proprietary development of databases, upgrades, and technical support from your company's hardware and software vendors.

What is Network Security?

Network Security

Security is the greatest concern throughout the world for any network, both business and personal. Security does not only involve trying to keep unauthorized entry into your network, it includes other measures such as reliable backups of sensitive data, encrypted WiFi connections and email. The blocking of unwanted and illegal access to network users, such as adult content and peer sharing, is also included. Virus and Malware protection is a vital tool in any network environment, however without a properly configured workstation or server, it will not be fully effective.

Fire What?!

Many of you may have heard the terms firewall, proxy and content filter but, do not know if they need or even have one. The answer is YES! A firewall helps prevent hackers and malware from entering your network from the outside world. No firewall is 100% effective, but some are better than others. Proxy and Content Filtering are essential in any business network to prevent unapproved websites and software from being accessed by network users and installed system packages. As a company, if an employee obtains unlawful content through the company network, the company is held responsible.

What is a Computer Network?

Simply put, a computer network is all computers linked together to share common resources. The network is comprised of Servers and Workstations, but can also include Printers, Scanners, Fax Machines, and even Phones. The Administrator is responsible for interconnecting all these devices into the network and maintaining each node. There are thousands of configuration choices when developing a network, an experienced administrator will deploy the best configuration for each network. No two networks are identical, each one is as unique as a snow flake.

What is the difference in a Server and Workstation?

In most cases, there is no physical difference between a server and a workstation. The main difference is software and what the computer is designated for. For more demanding server applications, a computer with stronger hardware components is needed where in the workstation it is not. That is not true in all cases though, each server and workstation needs to be evaluated for the tasks it is to proform before any final decision is made.

Do I need to upgrade software and hardware?!

That is one of the toughest questions to answer for any network. Do you always need to upgrade? Definitely not! The biggest concern is always budget. Some upgrades can be inexpensive and fast while others can mean long periods of down time and be very costly. Again, the main task is to catalog all nodes on the network and evaluate what upgrades are needed to proform the tasks of the employees that will be using them.
